Despite a turn in the weather, Stafford made the admirable decision to travel to us in search of some revenge. On Board 1, Nikoli produced a superb performance, playing a blinder of a game to secure a vital victory and ensure the match ended in a draw overall.
Board 2 saw Luke facing a formidable, higher-rated opponent. Knowing the challenge ahead, he invested a significant amount of time at the board and was rewarded with a completely balanced position. After 25 moves the game was entirely equal, and a draw was the fair outcome.
On Board 3, Bob—clearly in fine form this season—played another fascinating encounter. He steered the game confidently into a rook endgame, where both players agreed to a peaceful draw.
Catherine on Board 4 showed great determination against a tough younger opponent. She fought hard throughout and even had chances late on to salvage a draw, though absolute accuracy was required. Despite the result, it was a tremendous effort.
All things considered, a match draw was a fair reflection of the contest. On to the next—and is the title defence still within reach?
