Chess in the Community

Matt Carr and Dan Turner, two of our members, are chess arbiters and so referee chess tournaments across the country, and in Matt's case, internationally. Matt is extremely experienced and qualified and Dan is progressing rapidly along the same path.
Under the auspices of Chess in Schools and Communities, a registered charity, we provide free chess sessions at Rugeley Library. The chess sets used are provided by Chess in Schools and Communities who also provide booklets that clearly explain the chess basics. The Rugeley Library chess sessions are:-
-
on Tuesdays during the school terms from 3.45 pm to 4.45 pm
-
completely free
-
open to players of all ages and ability
-
suitable for beginners and improvers as tuition is provided
-
suitable for those who just want to enjoy a game of chess
Two of our junior members at Rugeley Chess Club, Oli and Will, started their chess journey at the Rugeley Library chess sessions. Both now play regularly in inter-club matches and last season Oli won the Dolan Trophy, a knock out competition run by the Cannock Chess League.
As the Rugeley Library sessions are run by volunteers it is sometimes not possible for a volunteer to be present on a particular Tuesday. On these occasions the library staff will provide the chess sets so participants can play each other. Whenever possible the status (tutor present or absent) of each Tuesday session will be indicated in the News and Events section by the previous Sunday.
