Our old neighbours at the Guild Hall welcomed us for what turned out to be a hard-fought evening of chess.
Board 1
Nik’s game was the highlight of the night. In a position that seemed destined to be drawn, time pressure told: Nik unfortunately flagged in what was otherwise a fascinating encounter.
Board 2
Matt, Facing a higher-rated and ultra-cautious opponent, held his ground admirably. The position was balanced for a long stretch, but eventually his opponent’s passed pawn proved decisive, forcing Matt to concede.
Board 3
Bill played solidly and gradually gained a pawn advantage. He probed for chances to convert but his opponent defended resourcefully, and the game ultimately fizzled into a draw.
Board 4
Luke was impressed by his opponent’s deep preparation, which featured an enterprising pawn and bishop sacrifice. The compensation proved telling, and once the dust cleared, Luke was staring down a three-pawn deficit. He resigned gracefully in a well-fought contest.
The final scoreline favoured Lichfield, but there was no lack of fighting chess from our side. We leave encouraged, knowing that every game demanded the best from both teams. Lichfield came to play. Match card to follow
