We came into this match looking to get back on track after a disappointing opening result, with the title defence still very much in mind. Close neighbours Lichfield fielded a higher-rated side, promising a tough and competitive contest.
Board 1
Nik played superbly despite being a pawn down. His opponent couldn’t convert the advantage, and Nik found a classy shuffle at just the right moment to secure a vital draw.
Board 2
Matt faced a very strong opponent but used his time excellently. Activating rook and knight, he picked up a pawn and edged the endgame, with a fair draw the right result.
Board 3
Luke diverted from his usual setup, opting for an unconventional defence against d4. Black held firm, exchanged White’s strong knight, and the game quickly simplified into an early draw.
Board 4
Catherine looked in serious trouble and knew it herself. Digging deep, she turned the pressure back on her opponent and forced a decisive, game-ending blunder for a brilliant turnaround.
The final score finished 2.5–1.5, a strong team performance from Rugeley. That result leaves us level on points with Lichfield, with just two games remaining in what’s shaping up to be a thrilling season.
